Update
Been to the clinic today. Vision is rubbish only getting third line so cataract is taking its tole. They struggled to get a reading on the astigmatism as well because of the darn cataract. So placed on waiting list for cataract op They are going to go with a standard lens and possibly pop a couple of sutures in to help the astigmatism if required. We will see how we go with standard lens but they may redo with a toric when they can get s good reading.
Also they have stopped the steroids which makes me nervous. Positive side of that is I can stop taking Lumigan Preasure reducing drops which was giving me dark circles round the eye.

Re: Cataract and lens implant
Had my operation for the right eye yesterday. Not the slightest bit of pain during the procedure and quite interesting watching one big circle and two smaller ones moving around and changing colour at different times! Came home and after the anasthetic wore off had a feeling similar to a small piece of grit in the eye. That had completely gone when I got up this morning and have been completely pain free. However, vision has not been good. Currently more distinct than my left eye without glasses but much worse than my left eye with glasses (I've removed the right lens from my glasses!). The surgeon rang me late this afternoon and I described what I was seeing as best as I could and he expects my vision to improve day-by-day as he believes the operation will have caused some swelling of the cornea because of the Fuchs Dystrophy I also have. He said the cataract operation was as perfect as it could have been and still expects that I won't need an operation for the dystrophy. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Re: Cataract and lens implant
Hi Ian,
I think things are improving slowly. I'm now driving using my specs with one glass removed and there seems to be no noticable difference between the eyes in terms of vision. However, I can't see that the "new eye" is any better than the old one when I used specs and, spookily, I get the impression that the "new eye" is better with mid-range vision than long distance vision. Still early days, though!

Re: Cataract and lens implant
Well, it's now been nearly 5 weeks since I had my right eye done and yesterday I had the left eye done also. Before the cataract op yesterday, I had to go in last Wednesday to have a retina tear sorted out before the cataract op. Like the first cataract op, both the retina op and the second cataract op were completely painless. Still wasn't happy with the vision in my right eye 5 weeks down the line but the surgeon says the both cataract ops were technically perfect and that the first op had caused no deterioration in the Fuchs Dystrophy. Before the second op yesterday, the surgeon sent me to one of his colleagues at the hospital who gave me an eye test and put in several lenses for vision correction. Before putting in the lenses on my right eye, I could read only the top line clearly. However, with the best lens adjustment, I could read every line pretty well! It's the clearest I've seen anything for years. What I can't understand is why I can't read anything clearly at distance without specs with my first post-op eye. Even after just 1 day following the 2nd op, I can manage on the PC without specs and bought a pair of cheap reading glasses today which allowed me to read the newspaper easily. I'm quite happy outside without specs BUT although I can see objects at long range, I still can't read street names or road signs at all (which was the main purpose of the op). It looks as though I will be fine if I now get specs to do this but I thought that the cataract removal and lens replacement would have the same effect without needing specs for long distance vision. That was certainly what the surgeon had hoped. He did say that he expects my eye to improve more even after 5 weeks so I hope he's correct. The surgeon gave me a copy of the letter being sent to my GP and I noticed one paragraph says that my Visual Acuity is as follows:-
Right Eye - 6/9 best corrected.
Left Eye - 6/15 best corrected
I assume this following his colleague's optical tests.
Obviously, the cataract had been removed from the Right Eye but not from the Left Eye when these readings were taken.
Perhaps one of the experts on the board can tell me if I can I expect a better reading from the Left Eye follwing the cataract removal or does "best corrected" mean that is the best I can hope for in all circumstances?

Have your stiches been removed yet? I've read that there can be significant changes after suture removal

Didn't have any stitches as far as I know. Only one appointment inabout 5 weeks to check the results of the second cataract op.
