Grafts

Postby Grim10 » Sat 15 Sep 2012 8:15 pm

I had a graft 10 years ago un my right eye. How long is the graft suspected to last? I had it redone since the first failed because of infection caused scarring.
If this graft rejects is it possible to do a third graft ( btw I am 35). The graft done 10 years ago was a fully graft. Is it possible to have it redone with synthetic corneas in the future?
Also I probably need a graft in my other eye as well. Which technique is preferred, full graft or partial? Which has the best visual result?
Is it unusual being 35 having both eyes grafted?

There's a question.

Some people have enjoyed decades, and others who are not here to confirm what I say, have enjoyed a life time of sight after a graft.

Some have known only a short time.

I think what I am saying is that your question is a good one, but the answer is difficult to find.

Every good wish

still no answer which method is the best when it comes to visual performance and graft???

I honestly think this forum starts to suck. Usually there is 20-25 views however not a single sole responds. Is that to much to ask?

It is impossible to say if partial or full thickness is best because it depends on clinical factors.

If the fgraft needs to come close the the corena margins, partial is the best because of the reduced risk of rejection.

For a more central graft, there are other cliical factors such as has the endothelium been damaged, how deep is any scaring on the cornea etc, so each person is very different.

Full thickness grafts generally heal quicker than a partial. A partial has less risk of rejection. The quality of vision at then end is a very individual thing where it is only anecdotal regarding which gives the best vision.

So as you can see there is no simple answer.

My grafts are over 20 years old.

P.S as with any forum the number of views doesn't mean much as some search engines open up pages and there is no one on the other end so to speak! You ask some very specific questions whioch to be honest there is no definitive answer and as there are more poeple here with KC than have had grafts you are more limited on experiences.

your commnet about the forum starting to suck is far from helpful and made me think twice about posting a resonse and trying to help!
Gareth
