Hi all,
I am 20 years old and I got recently diagnosed with keratoconus in both eyes. I use glasses, but as the minimum thickness of the cornea is about 460 microns in evolution, my consultant proposed to me the “Athens Protocol”, that means a combined, same-day, topography-guided partial PRK and collagen cross-linking CLX.
http://bmctoday.net/crstodayeurope/2010 ... s-protocol
The operation will take place in Athens, with the use of the AVEDRO KLX equipment for the clx treatment.
It seems that in my country many KC specialists are favorable to the simultaneous treatment PRK+CLX, for both cornea regularization and stabilization.
Has anybody an experience in both PRK+CLX treatment?
Best regards,
Epik

Re: PRK + CLX
Is this the sane thing accuvision offer? Has anyone on here had prk with crosslinking?
Just wondering what peoples experiences have been like

hello again,
I shall have my own experience on the PRK+CLX treatment next week and I will be back with details...
Meanwhile, you can watch a video recently uploaded, that seems interesting:

Re: PRK + CLX
hi again,
Finally, it was so simple...
1 minute for the epithylion, 5 minutes for the t-PRK and 12 minutes for the collagen crosslinking !!!
Exellent economic efficiency for the clinic (3.500 euros for less than 20 active minutes of treatment).
Two points that make the difference: the huge experience of the surgeon (over 2.000 clxs) and the use of the AVEDRO KLX equipment.
No pain, exept the first night, with only one Lonarid-N pill.
I will upload the video of my own treatment t-PRK+CLX on youtube in the next few days.
Greetings from Athens,
Epik

Re: PRK + CXL
hello,
5 days after the treatment t-PRK + CXL and everything seems to be ok.
I visited the syrgeon yesterday, he found that the epithylion had been remade 100% and put off the protective contact lens.
Next visit in 25 days, I'll have a topography at that day.
I am optimist for the cornea regularization, intended by the t-PRK. I hope that I'll have no need of glaces or contact lenses in the future....
I am also optimist for the cornea stabilization, intended by the CXL, as the minimum thickness of the cornea was enough over 400 microns.
(important: I met a KC patient treated successfully last year with the same protocol, ALTHOUGH THE MINIMUM CORNEA THICKNESS WAS ABOUT 350 microns !!!!!!!)
Greetings from Athens and don't give up,

Re: PRK + CLX
Hi,
3.500 per one eye oder both eyes?
I guess one, right?
besides Dr.K is very good. I had the same procedure with Dr. Cummings WEC in Dublin.
He is also one of the best eyes surgeons.
Was 460 microns your thickness after or before epithelium removal?
Best regards and wish you so much luck!

Re: PRK + CLX
Hello again,
you are right, metallic, 3.500 euros per eye !!!
I met dr Kanellopoulos, a few months ago and my first impression was that he is very self confident.
During the treatment, the computer is the protagonist, but the surgeon is the stage director, so the experience and the confidence is what we pay (plus the technology).
The thickness of 460 microns was before the epithelium removal.
It seems that the limit of 400 (according to the protocol) is no more an obstacle and many surgeons have successful treatments with corneas of 350+
thanks

Glad its going well epik! Thanks for the updates:)
Does anyone know, if this is similar to the t-cat with crosslinking accuvision do?

Re: PRK + CLX
hello liam,
I am not a KC specialist, but I thing that the "Advanced Topography Guided (T-CAT) laser treatment" proposed by "Accuvison" is almost the same as the "Topography-Guided Partial PRK (t-PRK)" treatment described by the "Athens Protocol", in order to regularize (re-shape) the cornea and reduce the astigmatism.
All data of the topography become the inputs of the laser device, the surgeon decides how to proceed and the device does the job, just like a laisik treatment.
A few minutes after the laser treatment, the collagen crosslinking with riboflavin treatment (CXL) is applied in order to stabilize the cornea.
In my case, the use of the AVEDRO KXL device did the CXL treatment in 12 minutes.
Was it helpful?
Thanks,
epik
