Daughters Cross linking
Hi, i am new to the forum. My 12 year old daughter was diagnosed with K in August. She has had RGP lenses fitted, but has not really persevered with them as they are very uncomfortable. In addition she is due to have Cross linking on her first eye on saturday. Her consultant advised her not to wear her lenses leading up to the proceedure so there seemed little point in trying. I am aware that the purpose of cross linking is to stabalise the condition, but also have read that some people do experience a slight improvement. Her prescription is currently -4 in one eye and -3 in the other (but with glasses and lenses still not very good). Is there a possibility that she may be able to use soft lenses after the cross linking has settled down? also how long after cross linking do you have to wait before lenses are worn, and will her current RGP lenses still fit or will new ones be needed, if so will these have to be paid for or available free under the NHS (current ones free as she is a child)? sorry for so many questions.

Re: Daughters Cross linking
Hi Jo and welcome to the forum,
Lynn, one of the optometrists who regularly posts here gave a reply to a similar question just a few days ago (you'll find it towards the end of the Keraflex thread just a few posts down from this). She was saying that she advises soft lenses while the eye is settling down after CXL and that they can be fitted a few weeks after the procedure. If your daughter still eventually needs rgps after the CXL, she is likely to need refitting. And she should still be able to get her lenses free from the hospital because of her age. Lynn will probably be along soon to give a professional answer, and I'm sure your consultant will be able to answer your questions after Saturday. All the very best for the day.
