New RGP: Fuzzy, cloudiness, blurs...

Postby jamesleicester » Tue 03 Aug 2004 8:30 pm

Hi everyone, I'm in the early stages of KC & wearing an RGP in my left eye. I wore an RGP a few months ago for a short while but gave up due to bad bloodshot & soreness. I eventually found out this was due to my optician fitting the wrong sort of lens. So, I got fed up of the guessing games & was refered to the NHS's QMC in Nottingham. I've seen a specialist there this month who has made me an RGP. I collected & tried it out today. As soon as I put the lens in my vision seemed to be worse. All objects suddenly had fuzzy, double edges. My vision went misty too. Does anyone know why this was please? I only wore the lens for 1 hour today as directed. I am going to try again tomorrow for 2 hours so wish me luck. Sorry, I went on a bit. Cheers, James.

If your eyes are watering too much it might account for some of the problems and this should get better with time as they get used to having large foreign objects stuck on the corneas. On the other hand if you weren't already wearing contacts, then don't expect the prescription to be right first time - if you don't get proper correction with spectacles then there's a bit of guesswork and trial and error involved in getting your contact lens prescription. You should be seeing the optician again fairly soon so the prescription can be checked then.

Thanks for the speedy reply Polly. I'm going back to the hospital tomorrow for a check up because the lens makes my vision worse. Grrr!!! This is really frustrating because like everyone else I suppose I've waited ages for a lens (I'm sure I'll get used to that though). As for your theory on a build up of tears bluring my sight, the water works normalize after about 30 mins of insertion so I don't think this explains the poor vision. I had the lens in for 2 hours today. By the end of this period my vision was worse so I took the bugger out. Thanks for all your thoughts. I'll see what the doc says tomorrow.

James,

If you have gone some time without seeing properly, it takes the brain a while to learn to compensate again, I am going back a few years, but when I first got KC I had headaches because it was hard to see and got used to it. The headaches started agin when I got lenses and I did see double for a while, but by sheer bloody minded determination and not wanting to give up motor racing I got through it.

Hang in there, I am only an hour from Nottingham and will be going back to lenses soon.

Patience my friend.

Gareth

just to let you know i had the same kind of problems you are exspirencing keep trying with the lenses but if you dount have much luck talk to your hospital about having the graft done as you should be able to wear glases as they say you vision gets better. i am on the waiting list for my graft as i could not wear contact lenses.

There's no guarantee you won't have to wear contact lenses following a graft - its not a way to avoid having to use them, unfortunately.

And even if lenses aren't necessary, getting optimal vision with glasses isn't as simple as it seems either - your vision will be settling down for a long time afterwards (years) and constantly changing, even varying through the day!

The graft on my right eye (Jan '03) has been a huge success - it's changed my life.

But even though I've given up wearing my lens in my (un-grafted) left eye - I'm in no hurry to get that one done too. Getting a graft should be a last resort - there's no going back once its done.

Rob.
