sclera lenses

I have been trying lenses with diameters of around 18mm that some call scelra and some call mini sclera. The lenses are not too uncomfortable intially , although not totally comfortable as indicated in some literature. However this comfort decreases with wearing period. I mean it is more comfortable for the first 3 to 4 days. After that my eyes become pinkish and more uncomfortable. The ring of red starts inside the landing zone (of the lens) and gradually spreads. It take couple of days of not wearing the lens for the redness to disappear. Wonder if any one can shed light on this so I can share it with my optometrist. She is not sure as to the reason and thinks the lens clears the cornea and limbus and the edge is not steep.

I had this kind of problem when my lenses were too tight. With the left eye more so than the right.
I wear a 14mm semi scleral(So2Clear) piggy backed on a soft lens. Wear time has improved a lot and my eyes look a lot better when the lenses come out.

Thank you electricheadx for the comment. I have also thought the reason may be that the curve covering the limbus area may be to tight. Just as a matter of interest who is your fitter? My optom is Clare Maguire. She works in The Wellingtom Eye Clinic.

You really wouldnt believe the difference piggybacking has made.
Increase comfort, Increased wear time. When the lenses come out my eyes feel a lot better.

Hi,
I was in Dublin for SimLC with Dr. Cummings and here I got to know Clare too. I had just a short talk with her after the surgery.
She is really very nice.

So at the moment I am also trying to wear mini-sclerallenses. Not So2Clear. I don´t know the manufacturer.
Is it really possible to wear a soft lens under your scleral lenses?
Is there enough oxygen going trough? Did it decrease your vision acuity?
And important question: Did you start the fitting process with the so2clear already knowing there will be a soft lens under it or was it later? Whas it then necessary to adjust the lens for this purpose?
How long did it take with your fittings that you could say, now is alright?
How often was the lens modified before?

Would be great if you could help me further. Sorry for so many questions.
You know, I have so damn sensitive eyes. I thought scerals were my last hope. They are better then normal corneo RGPs but I still feel a little bit uncomfortable with them.

Clare is really nice and she has the patience of a saint. It has taken just over a year to get my lenses right, so fair play to het for sticking with it.
Yes it is completly possible to wear a soft lens under the semi scleral.
My eyes are in better condition with the soft lens under the SoClear then without. The lenses are not causing any damage to my corneas whatsoever.
Oxygen permerability isnt a problen for me a least.
The fitting process was started with just the intention of just wearing the SoClear, but i was having some problems with comfort and debris getting under the lens. The soft lens has solved this.
It wasnt nessary to adjust the hard lens in my case. As far as i can tell visual accuity hasn't been really affected.
It took 2 fittings to get the soft lens right.
Before trying the soft lens option i had 7 lenses for the left and 6 lenses for the right fitted.

What manufacturer or name is your soft lens? That would be very interesting.

I had worn a piggy-back system with a normal keratoconus RGP. Here I used a one
called "AirOptix Night and Day" with zero sphere. These lenses theoretically could be worn
30 days without a break. But ofcourse I cleaned them every day for safety.

Im using an Acevue Oasys soft lens. Lasts for 2 weeks. Comes out at the end of the day and gets cleaned.
Using this lens just keeps the cost down for me.

I think I should try this lens mabye. I must ask my fitter as soon as possible.
Is it "Acuvue Oasys" or "Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism" with Headraclear Plus?
Only second one I found in the net with 0,00 sphere.

Or what refractive value do you have in your Acuvue?

Im using the standard Acuvue Oasys.
with +1 for the left eye and -0.5 for the right. BC of 8.8 for both.
I started with A BC of 8.4 for both but the left one was stuck on my eye when taking it out. I think i will be sticking with 8.8 for the left and possibl the 8.4 for my right as it feel a little more comfy.
That tweak with the softs seems to work well for me. But i guess there would be pronlem with the Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism lens with plano power.
