RGP Lenses Quickly

Postby bdixon1988 » Mon 23 May 2011 12:09 pm

Hi all,

Just had the rather annoying experience of by left RGP lens blowing out in the wind, despite a lot of very helpful people looking with me, I wasn't able to recover it. Normally this would be irritating but not the end of the world - the others eyes corrected vision is reasonable so day to day stuff is doable.

Unfortunately I'm having crosslinking done on the other (right) eye in 3 days time and the left eye's uncorrected vision is pretty much non existent.

Does anyone know of suppliers who can deal directly with end users and can make up lenses with a rapid turnaround time? I've re-ordered the lost lens but expect it won't be here until late next week at best.

Many thanks,

Ben

My eye doctor at the hospital usually gets them for 2weeks. But no idea of how to get them rapidly in an emergency.
If you do find out please do keep us posted, could prove helpful.

Whenever i get my contacts changed, i tend to pay for a spare pair of contacts aswell just incase if mine drops outout side or something similar.

The Optometrist I go to are also pretty good about turnaround times, generally 1 - 2 weeks and very good when it comes to fittings, trying different lens types etc but it would be good to know if there was a way to get a lens of known spec made quickly for "emergency" situations. I definitely should have made sure I had a spare (I was already using my spare so own fault really for not ordering a new one earlier). I'll continue my search and let everyone know if I find anywhere that can manufacture and dispatch directly.

is there any further info or findings on this guys?

Just dropped my right lens down the sink... , no spare either this is like the 4th one i have lost haha.
I could have got it out of the sink pipe where the bend is, thats where its probably sitting. But with the risk of getting eye infection due where the lens has gone down the pipe i dont see it being worth risking eye infection.

Il be ordering couple pairs tommorow from opthalmist, there goes another £200ish pound for lenses, say £55ish each they are not cheap either, prob end up in overdraft now lol.

It is quite a good idea to have a spare pair. I find that when my prescription changes I can hold onto the lens that is replaced and use it in an emergency (so long as my prescription has not changed too much).

That's interesting, maybe its because I'm getting mine through the NHS but I've got to hand my old ones back. I was hoping I could do the same.

Barry,

I've always kept an old pair of lenses as a spare - I never go anywhere without a spare pair. The only time I've not been able to keep a pair was when they were totally unsuitable and they would have been no use as a main, never mind a spare pair.

One possible reason that you might have been asked to return your old lenses is, I think, that some manufacturers offer an exchange if a set of lenses don't fit first time. As you only received your first lenses last month this could be the reason.

Lia
