vision levels

Postby hugo » Mon 31 Jan 2011 4:13 pm

Hi Again!
Thanks to all the help this time last year when first diagnosed! I am back with some more queries. I now have the rigid gas lenses, have got used to them and am now about to apply for university. On my application I have stated i have keratoconus and they have asked for my vision levels. The consultant has given me a letter with the information that my vision is 6/60 in right eye and 6/9 in left. With lenses it is 6/9 in right and 6/5 in left eye. I dont quite understand what this means in comparison to 'normal' vision - can anyone explain to me, please? :D

6/6 is normal vision; that is you see at six meters the same as others would see at six meters.

6/60 which is better than I get with my right eye means you are seeing someinthing at 6 meters away which a normal person would be able to see 60 meters away.

Therefore 6/9 you are seeing stuff at 6 meters duistance that a normal person would see 9 meters away.

6/5 is better than normal, although many now consider 6/5 to be normal, so folloing the above you are seeing at 6 meters what a normal person would see at 5 meters distance.

If you get a sight test with for example 6/6+; that means you are getting all the 6/6 line and some of the 6/5 line but too few to make it to the next classification.

Simples

and of course this related to the American 20/20 vision thing. 20 feet is approx 6 metres!
