Having only ever got NHS lenses from Moorfields I can only comment on theIr system whereby the lens is only ordered once you have made payment to their cashier (situated elsewhere in the hospital).
There are exceptions for those people that do not have to pay, e.g. claiming benefit of some kind (DLA, Job Seekers Allowance), you are at retirement age etc. It may be worth asking though as I am sure you would agree £55 is a small cost to pay compared to no vision!
