Sudden irritation. To see GP?

Hi there,

Out of the blue, I woke up this morning with a very irritated right eye. It's too uncomfortable to concentrate on anything much, and I'm finding it difficult to keep the eye open. The only thing is that it's worse when that eye is closed!!!
I haven't been wearing a lens in that eye recently.

I've put some sodium cromoglycate and also some Minims first to see whether that reduces the problem. If it doesn't I guess I may have to go to the GP.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi - you might be better off going to your hospital eye clinic A&E to get this looked at. Not sure your GP will have the expertise to help. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Go to the clinic: it is only a train ride away, and you will be seen by an Ophthalmologist.

The irritation of the eye itself and the pain in the middle has gone since using Minims and sodium cromoglycate, but it hurts too much to close the eye.
I kept my GP appointment in the first instance and he said the eyelid is swollen and I most likely have blepharitis. He has given me chloramphenicol drops to use every 2 hours initially. If they don't take effect by tomorrow, I'll head up to Garnavel eye casualty first thing in the morning.

There is nothing like an ophthalmic nurse for dealing with the insides of eyelids, and if there's a foreign body or pus in there, I will need their fab skill to swab the inside of the eyelid!

GP must have hit the nail on the head, as the antibiotic drops are working like a dream.
