RGP Lenses and "dirt/sleep" in eye

Postby pops » Fri 18 Jul 2008 12:46 pm

Hi Peeps

I have been wearing my RGP lenses for over two years now, they are comfortable and can sometimes get up to 14 hours wear out of them. I have been told by a number of different optoms that the fit of my lenses are excellent. My main problem, which i have always experienced, is the accumulation of "sleep" (i think thats what you call the yellowy stuuf that you get in yor eye when you wake up) throughout the day. It tends to get under the lenses making them cloudy, this occurs slightly during the day then gets worse at in the evening, eventually meaning i have to take the lenses out. My main occupation is a prgrammer so i am in front of a computer from 9-5. My question is; is there anything available ie, drops or is there anything i can do to rectify this.

Many Thanks in advance.

Hi Amit
I developed this problem after 30+yrs(!) of wearing rgps. A regime of various drops from my eye clinic seems to have solved it, so yes, there are drops that can help. So do go back to your optom and discuss this further. And of course, there's the standard advice of taking regular breaks from the computer screen during the day, perhaps plants round your desk to reduce the dryness of the air, wetting drops such as Refresh or Blink which can all help.

I had thta problem with my lenses and sort of grew out of it.....
And don't nrmally get it now lenses are made out of gas permeable (RGP) materials rather than Perspex.
Except I now seem to get it again with new lens in grafted - that's another story (I hope).
Taking lenses out to give the eyes a rest during the day may help.
SOme people say they have had good results from a change in diet - drinking plenty of water (or juice), less coffee and cutting down on dairy products has helped some people to change the consistency of their tears so they are runnier and make less goo.
The other thing I've found to be a factor is the dreaded H*y F*v*r.
Good luck and hop eyou get it sorted out.
Rosemary
