I actually like the catapault idea. Perhaps we should patent this. I've even thought of a strap line:

Breakfast in London, Lunch in New York ...Lens Solution in Amsterdam

Thanks for your replies. Just to let you know I got some trial bottles from Gartnavel hospital this morning, so I should be fine now!

Thanks again and I'll speak to you when I'm back.

Hi all,

Just an update to tell you what I did, it may help if you're stuck in a similar situation

I went to Boots and got a couple of their 100ml clear bottles - they keep them in the section along with suntan lotion/sunglasses etc. They weren't the cheapest (Boots) but well made and had clear "100ml" labels on them.

In one bottle I put my solution and in the other I put saline. 100ml is actually more than you would think and I had enough of each to easily last me 3 days. However, if you rinse a lot using saline I would recommend buying it locally.

I then bought some small freezer bags from Tescos - the ones with reseable tops - customs demand that they are resealable. They had Tesco logo on one side but i'm not proud!

At East Mids airport I sailed through, apart from having to have a number of trays to put my stuff in, one for my bag, one for my laptop, another for my solutions, another for my shoes and coat (yep, shoes off please sir) and a fifth tray for my phone which I forgot I had in my trouser pocket.

There were a lot of passengers that weren't aware or didnt care about the liquid ban - even though you're asked in check in and there are BIG posters up as you approach security. A passenger who came through after me was given a strict telling off as he had all his deodorant etc. in his hand luggage. "BUY A BAG OR IT STAYS HERE" he was told and a certain amount of his stuff had to stay there as it was over 100ml.

It was well worth the effort as not having to have hold luggage meant I whisked through both airports after we'd landed. If you're going for a short break somewhere (with air fares as they are, why not - I think the taxi into Dublin was more expensive!!) its worth trying to get away with just hand luggage.

Anyway, I'll stop blurting - I'm kapooped after a long two days. Hope this helps someone.
Eddie
Somebody complimented me on my driving yesterday - they left a note on my windscreen "Parking Fine" which was nice.

I haven't been travelling since the new restrictions on hand luggage and have to admit that I don't know what they are at the moment. From your discussions above I can conclude that I can only take solutions under 100ml in my hand luggage. Can I therefore take as much as i want in my main luggage? Does hand luggage still have to be in a clear bag or are you allowed to have normal bags as in the past? Any other items you're not allowed to take excluding the obvious sharp instruments etc?

Hi Bruce,
The regulations are that any liquids/lotions/creams/pastes gels etc you have should be in quantities of 100ml (each item not in total) or less and need to be carried in a resealable clear plastic bag up to 20cm x 20cm, you will be asked to remove this from your main hand luggage bag when you go through security. Once airside you can buy any quantity of liquids and carry them in your hand luggage.

If you can manage to get your contact lens solutions classified as essential medicines then this would be the only way to be allowed to carry more than 100ml through security.

There is no restriction on the amount of liquids you can carry in your checked luggage.

As far as i'm aware there are no new restrictions on items other than liquids in your hand luggage. The usual sharp objects etc are still the same, although the rules on lighters and matches seem to vary so if you take them, be prepared to lose them.

Do check the airport website because there is usually pretty comprehensive information on there, I believe that most airports are now restricting you to one bag through security, which they are very strict on, handbags, camera bags etc, all need to fit inside your main hand luggage bag as you will not be allowed to carry them seperately and they are also very strict about the size of the hand luggage bag you are allowed. In most cases I think this is 56cmx45cmx25cm including wheels, handles and pockets, they have baggage gauges at the airport that they use to measure your luggage.

It is also worth noting that these restrictions have nothing to do with the airlines themselves, they are imposed by the Department of Transport and enforced by the particular airport operator, so it is not within the power of the airlines to give dispensation for people to carry items through security, although if you contact them, they may be able to point you in the direction of someone who can help.

Hope this answers your query. Have a good trip.
Emma
