Server outage

Postby John Smith » Thu 12 Apr 2007 9:34 am

Apologies to anyone who tried to access the site from 10pm last night until 10am today. It seems that the server whinged about the heat and then turned itself off!

All seems to be fine now, but I'm keeping a close eye on it.

Regards,

I noticed :D

Glad to see it's back, I thought you'd finally got the chrisk filter working properly.

As soon as the good weather comes and the sun is out the server disappears. I'm beginning to suspect Keratoconus.

Hmmm... the server failed again yesterday; and may do so again, in which case it may be down until Tuesday when we can get a spare part to it.

Apologies in advance.

Yes, strangely, everything has been running ok since Friday, but there's no reason why!! I still expect it all to be dodgy now, so I'm keeping my fingers well and truly crossed for now!

Hi John,

Not teaching you to suck eggs or anything because you seem to be doing a mighty fine job keeping the site up.

However, knowing from bitter experience, if your server is complaining about the heat then do *anything* you can to ensure its get cooled down.

(are you sucking yet!?)

At the last company I worked for we had a small number of servers but a building that was very cold in the winter and scorching in the summer. One night after a very hot day we managed to melt a UPS (power supply) or at least the car sized batteries within it.

I've also seen a number of desktop PCs just give up when the fan on the power supply gives up - the capacitors start melting/exploding and giving off a very horrible smell.

Anyway, i'll stop now before I go too far!

Good luck

Ed

Somebody complimented me on my driving yesterday - they left a note on my windscreen "Parking Fine" which was nice.
KC managed with softperm lens in left eye, Intacs (2/11/07) in right eye

Ouch Eddie, that is some experience!

The CPU fan and PSU (together with one of the RAID discs) are now scheduled for replacement next Tuesday. Fingers crossed that the server will last that long.

At least we know now that if the server self-detects too much heat it turns itself off PDQ. Isn't linux grand? :)

Oh, and the server is in a VERY air-conditioned room with temperature monitoring at a data centre. So the environment is at least a known factor.
John
