Cataracts and KC

Postby Judith Tomlinson Harrison » Sat 11 Nov 2006 6:45 pm

My mother has just had a cataract operation and we were talking today about eyes, She asked me if I were to get cataracts in later years (I am 58 ) how would I go on because of my KC. In my case it is only quite mild and unlikely to develop further.
Does anyone know the answer and I wonder how anyone with severe KC or who has had grafts would go on.

Judith

Quite a lot of people with KC also get cataracts; not because they are linked or related but because people with KC have no automatic immunity to other eye conditions.

Sometimes Cataracts can be caused by trauma (such as eye surgery).

Sometimes they can be promoted by steroid use.

I have a cataract in my right eye and this developed two and a half years after surgery.

Now for the good news: people with KC can have cataract surgery in exactly the same way as people without KC. Indeed even after a graft the cataract operation is still carried out with great success.
