Second Opinion

Postby jeremy » Fri 04 Aug 2006 2:37 pm

Hi, ive just had my first pair of lenses fitted at Kingston, i'm not happy with the left one, i can see considerably better with the lens out. I want to try and get a second opinion if i can, does anyone have any recommendations for a private practitioner, ive spoken to moorfields-private practice but they cant give me an appointment for a month.
Cheers

Jeremy,

Lens fitting is as much an art as it is a science.

As these are your first pair, it is possible that the lens fir will not be 100% which is why you will probably ahve a return visit quite soon to see how you are getting on.

How long have you ahd the lenses?

It might be too soon to be asking for a second opinion as some peopel get through 3 - 4 lens before the correct fit is found.

I agree Jearamy, give it some time as I had to endure quite a few fittings before I got to where I am now.

The first fit was better than my glasses that's for sure (from 6/36 corrected to 6/12 corrected) but it was just to get the fit right, then they worked on the correction.

Jez,
My first post graft lenses were also fitted at Kingston. They were very kind but could only offer me soft perms with 6 hours daily wearing time. They were also very difficult to insert and remove. I could no longer tolerate RGPs after the grafts.

I found out about scleral lenses and they were very discouraging about them. However I insisted on a referral to Moorfields. Took me 6 weeks to achieve and a lot of nagging! Moorfields prescribed sclerals and I now get 12 hours a day regularly and sometimes longer.

Be prepared for a long wait. It took about 4 months to get an appointment at Moorfields and then 2 months to get the lenses. But it was worth it.

I did go back to Kingston and showed them my sclerals. I also suggested one of the opticians go on a course to learn to fit them so that more people could benefit and gave them Ken's name. Clearly they didn't do anything about it. This was about 6 years ago.
