My son has kerataconus, diagnosed about 18 months ago in one eye; now aged 24.
He has just had INTACS fitted a week ago in one eye.
So far he has had no improvement in sight and possibly worse. He is also more light phobic at the moment. How long is it reasonable to wait for and hope that the eye may settle down and improve. Or if it's no better by now, should we just try and accept it?
(I hadn't realised until seeing this forum how that INTACS are not common in the UK)
He tried contacts but couldn't keep then in for more than an hour without great discomfort.
We aren't getting much info from the surgeon.

Welcome to the forum!
A week is too soon for the cornea to heal and the intac to settle...so try and not be too alarmed at this stage...give it around 4-6 weeks for it to settle and then he will see the true gain.......assuming it makes a difference...which there is no reason for it not to.
Can I ask on what premise was Intacs sold to your son? what did the surgeon say it would accomplish? The reason why I ask, is that Intacs primary use was to reshape the cornea to allow for a contact lens to be fitted (generally to a steep cornea).....

KC is about facing the challenges it creates rather than accepting the problems it generates -

Thanks for the reassurance.
He is finding the eye more comfortable now after 2 weeks, not sure about vision yet.
He was recommended INTACS as a possible step towards managing with just glasses.
He certainly not in a mind to try contacts again if at all possible.
He's started driving abit but finds distances hard to judge with only one good eye in the dark.
thanks from

Hi Pete
I had my intacs fitted in March, as I had become intolerant to lenses. I had them put in both eyes. I had to wait weeks before I could get my eyes tested. For those 6 weeks my vision was next to nothing.
I can now manage with just glasses. There are a few ups and downs but all in all it seems to have been worth it.

Hi Kathy. I hope all is going well with your vision now.
I just wondered how progressed your KC is?
I'm going for an initial consultation for intacs in a couple of days... but I can't bear the thought of not being able to see much for 4-6 weeks. I'd need to wait till the Christmas holidays for this to be a possibility.
My KC is apparently not too advanced, so i'm hoping that offers better hope for me!
