Collagen Crosslinking

Postby Jan Miles » Fri 16 Jun 2006 3:23 pm

Treatment update as promised. My surgeon decided to treat one eye at a time and also to remove the epithelium. Left eye treated on 8th June. All went wel, took about 1 1/2 hours and was totally painless - until the anesthetic wore off! Ouch. Couldnt see much out of the eye until day 3 as my eyelid was rather swollen. Day 4, vision all very hazy, totally out of focus (and yellow). Day 5 yellow gone, clarity improving but still very hazy. returned to work. Day 6, hazing diminishing, clarity improving.

Saw surgeon yesterday, 1 week after treatment. I could read several letters from the board much to my complete surprise and he managed to get a topograph reading for the first time from that eye. This hadnt been possible previously due scarring. He said the astigmatism had reduced from 8 to 5.

Every day I can see an improvement although the vision is still very hazy due to swelling in the epithelium. Now only time will tell.

Expect visual changes to last at least 3 months!!

Keep us updated! as i think you will provide some valuable information on the treatment and outcome!

Collagen Crosslinking

Thanks Jay,

Ill keep you posted. I dont expect miracles and I have been told that it could take up to a year to settle. I am aware that this treatment will not cure my keratoconus but will halt it and give a foundation for further treatment hopefully. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! it would be nice to see straight though!!! I bought myself some pinhole glasses which are great for 'resting' my eyes for a few minutes as my vision is really on the wonk at the moment. They seem to balance everything for a while and give a small insight into having fly eyes vision which is quite amusing!

Glad to hear your results were so good. There is great hope for crosslinking, I hope it is as good as we hope. It may not be a cure but here in Australia they are doing a trial and hoping to be able to offer it at time of diagnosis and halt progression. I figure the rest of your life in glasses with good vision is a cure.
