Wow!
So much information and only one telling off! Right, i might have to go to the docs when I have some time. There is a specialist contact lens place in birmingham though which has said contact lenses for kcers is £450. Am i getting ripped off?
I'm not sure if i have the patience to wait for a hospital to do its stuff and i havent really got the time for so many hospital fitting appointments because of work commitments. I get the feeling things might take ages on the good ol' nhs.
Keep the tips coming in though kids! Unfortunately at the moment due to the lack of KC knowledge i am unable to offer advise to othe members. But if anyone needs to know anout the history of knot tying though the 16th and 17th century feel free to ask.
Thanks everyone!
Regards

Hi Horses,
Now you've decided to get yourself some new lenses you need to find someone to fit your eyes. This can be easier said than done! If you can find a high street optician who has experience is KC and is able to fit you it will be a lot more convenient than waiting for hospital appointments. On the other hand a hospital will have opticians who are used to dealing with KC, and Eye Hospitals have clinics specifically for those of us with KC. As for costs, NHS lens are about £48 each, but you will also have to allow time for the appointment and travelling to it. You will probably need several appointments - getting a good fit is just as much an art as a science. Would you be being "ripped off" for lenses costing £450? That's a difficult one. As you described the lenses as "scary" I guess they were the scleral lenses. These, I believe, are more expensive than corneal lenses. Corneal lenses for non KC eyes cost about £160. Then there is chair time, the price will need to allow for this, and there will be lots of chair time. I remember when I was fitted on the high street about 15 years ago thinking that the optician couldn't have made any money from me. He spent hours finding the perfect lenses for me. I was one of his "challenges", at the time I didn't realise what a challenge I was.
In conclusion if you can afford it, and this lady believes she can fit your eyes, and you believe in her go for it! If you can't afford it, see you GP tomorrow and get on the waiting list! What is important is for you to see someone who can fit you with a pair of lens so that your sight is optimised.
Go on, make that appointment - you won't regret it.
Good Luck,
Lia
