Re: Full thickness cornea graft

Good to be on the other side now. Remember, rest, rest, rest when he gets home. After a few days when the anaesthetic is completely out of him he should feel a lot better. You'll probably get to know tomorrow when he is due for his first check-up. It's also worth asking if there is a number you can ...

Re: Full thickness cornea graft

It's good that he wants to go ahead. I could guess he hasn't got any vision at all from that eye and it is in a pretty post-traumatised state. I know our situation is different but for those of us with Keratoconus, when we get to the point there are no other options it is usually pretty clear and yo...

Re: Full thickness cornea graft

Really sorry for your husband, and you. Yes, we are a group who can end up with a corneal transplant but for medical reasons. Basically when the cornea is so distorted good vision cannot be achieved with spectacles or any of the different contact lenses. As it happens I had a full-thickness transpla...

Re: dioptres after graft

It's a difficult subject to generalise and answer a questions like, 'what's normal and what is acceptable vision?' In the early stages, KC is often missed and diagnosed as astigmatism, but as the KC progresses it is easier to understand what is happening. The main tool used for diagnosis is the topo...

Re: Keratoconus & cornea graft question

Yes, I can agree with Anne's comment. Getting the sutures out quickly doesn't seem to be the preferred option now. If all is well otherwise you risk disturbing the graft or getting an unexpected astigmatism - it's like a drum skin I'm told!

Re: Keratoconus & cornea graft question

Other than that, the cornea is very healthy and the keratoconus hasn't returned in all these years, so I'm happy. having these long term updates is really helpful to those of us way behind you. They ought to be clinically useful too, if the information could be captured in some way. I know it is in...

Re: dioptres after graft

I think it would be difficult to generalise about this as there are so many factors. It depends on the curvature of your cornea, your own natural 'lens' and the internal length of the eye. Before my graft I needed about +6D to be able to see distance. After the graft I needed about the same lens (bu...

Re: Setting the priorities for KC research

OK, a few suggestions to start the discussion. 1. Work on earlier diagnosis, building on the excellent research by Howard Maile, maybe through a screening tool for use by high street opticians. This could lead to a better understanding of the true extent of KC in population groups. Early interventio...

Re: DMEK and cataract surgery

That's an interesting approach, at least you're not having a full PK again, so your surgeon must be reasonably confident. I would still treat your recovery as before and get as much rest as you can, stick to you drops routine etc. etc. I did actually have to have a cataract done as soon as possible ...
