John, If you do decide to investigate the authentication route again, there are certainly other plugins available for say WordPress (so again php so code porting should be minimal effort) that instead of doing the unreadable letters ask the user to input the sum of two small numbers which are random...

I think it would be daft to take Rooney and gamble on his fitness, they would be better picking an experienced player such as Fowler who regularly does play with Peter Crouch and has played with Michael Owen at least they have a good understanding of each other.
