Re: First eye clinic appointment

the corneal map is totally painless. basically you look into a machine with some concentric circle lights, which flash and do funny stuff to measure the 'contours' of your cornea. the results are instant and the optham should be able to advise you from there. i can't comment on timescales in the UK ...

Re: Contact Lens Clouding over!

hi amanda, i wear piggybacks in my one eye (the other is grafted). i have this greasy clouding over problem often.. it seems to build up and over the months and we have worked out that tiny little scratches get on the hard lens, and the tear oils get stuck in the scratches and make it all murky... i...

Re: Question about irregular astigmatism post-graft

i was tentatively offered this (wavefront) before my graft but i haven't had the need to follow it up- as far as i know there is only one machine in RSA. i would be concerned of the risk of damaging the new graft- but i suppose if i needed to improve the vision i would consider it based on the speci...

Re: Advice Invited

hi louise, i know how you feel. sometimes the specialists give advice based on standards of vision...rather than the way the vision affects your life. when you speak to him/her- refer to functional vision- talk about how it affects your life.. sometimes the vision they measure is not real... in a co...

Re: Update - Genetics study

Hi David, Perhaps the relief from the eye-pain and irritation is the difference in humidity. i live in Durban SA, which is sub-tropical and pretty humid all year round (between 80% and 90%)... i struggle only when i am in an air-conditioned space (especially airplanes) or if i leave the coast. i rea...

Re: Blood donation

in South Africa they will happily take your blood if you have KC. after a graft they exclude you for a period of 4 months. after that they will accept your blood again.
Due to the ridiculously high HIV rate in SA- all blood is tested thoroughly before use.

Re: New here!

Hi Gill501... we have all felt that way before... and it isn't your fault.. just bad luck i say. try not to worry about the worst case scenario... from experience i know that the things I have feared the most are not so bad if/when they actually came around. get all the information you can now about...

Re: the wind causing problems

i can't handle wind in my eyes-- but love sailing, which accentuates the wind in the eye problem- because you naturally are looking into the apparent wind all the time... i have a pair of Oakley prescription sunglasses- wraparound in the darkest lens they offered.... and a pair of Adidas 'sports gla...

Re: Corneal transplant in 2 weeks

Hi Amer, I am glad it went well. RE: cleaning the gunk- i was given sterile saline and cotton wool pads to wipe my eye and told not to get it wet in the shower... it was February in Durban, which is super hot and humid, so i managed by taping a piece of thin plastic over the eye guard, over a cotton...
