Dear Jayboi I know you are recently turned 17 from reading earlier posts - if you are still in full-time education I don't think you will have pay for contact lenses prescribed through a hospital optometry department. I know we don't have to for our 17 year old son through Manchester Royal Eye Hospi...

Just wanted to say that my son gets his lenses from Manchester Eye Hospital optometry department and although we had a bit of a wait at first to see the consultant before he was diagnosed a few years ago, we have always been able to get quick appointments if he has had any problems with his vision o...

Hello Jayne, My son started showing symptoms at 10 (said he had 'double vision' and could see 'lines round things'), was diagnosed at 11 and managed with glasses (although only seeing out of one eye) until he was 13 when he got his first lenses at Royal Manchester Eye Hospital. He goes to the contac...

Logged in for the first time for a while to ask for other's experiences on just this issue for my son who is almost 17 and wants to apply for a provisional licence. In the end we rang the hospital and were advised that he should declare his KC but that this should not prevent him driving provided hi...

Not checked in for a while, but interested in the new approaches mentioned on the discussion board as alternatives to transplants. However, it seems that things like intacs have to be considered at a relatively early stage - if things go too far it appears that the possibilities become more limited....

I worked with a student with visual impairment (not KC) who had all sorts of devices, including some software which spoke to her letter by letter as she typed, and a scanner which could read text back to her from books, photocopied articles etc. She had an assessment done by the RNIB (presumably in ...

Thanks for comments - have approached school re extra time for exams, and am trying not to fuss too much as dray advises, but am probably failing miserably. Unfortunately my son can't manage without his lenses - glasses only help one eye a little and I think he feels quite vulnerable without them. H...

lens solutions
The issue of solutions not being available on prescription when they are medically necessary seems bizarre to me too, especially for children and young people. Could this be something to take up with someone, somewhere? (Not sure who it would be!)

teenagers and KC
I wondered if any of you with teenage children with KC have suggestions about a couple of issues I'm not sure how to approach with/for my 15 year old son. First GCSEs. He does most of these next year, but he has some modular exams coming up soon. On the basis of the experience he is having this summ...
