Re: Scleral Lenses: Flying + Swimming

If you can manage don't wear sclerals for swimming especially if you are likely to get your face wet! There is a risk of infection under your scleral even in chlorinated swimming pools. Equally you don't want any chlorinated water trapped under your scleral. So if you must, make sure you take them o...

Re: Stuck in limbo - discharged from hospital

That's good to hear. One way to follow things up is to contact PALS at the relevant hospital and ask them to follow it up for you. It can be useful to engage this way when often specific departments and clinics are 'hidden' behind a switchboard and you have had no email response or even have an emai...

Re: Dry eyes

Two things. You don't mention Hylo Night which is available over the counter but can also be prescribed. You use it literally at night, not when you are wearing lenses as it is greasy. The problem with other drops is that they can sometimes actually make things worse if they 'wash' away what tear fi...

Re: Keratoconus & cornea graft question

A lot of consultants and optoms take the view that to put the graft off as long as possible is a sensible approach. You still have it as an option if the other approaches are not successful. Not directly related to your situation but you will find his article on our website interesting reading https...

Re: Sclerals for dry eye

Dry eye is common alongside Keratoconus. Sclerals are often a good way of managing it. However getting to the bottom of the problem is important in the longterm. You might want to see a corneal consultant in addition to your contact lens fitter. It can be a symptom of an underlying medical issue. A ...

Re: Keratoconus & cornea graft question

I guessed so, as what you are describing is often how you know you have got to the end of the road with RGPs. Have sclera lenses been suggested? They may buy you a few more years without needing surgery and improve your vision significantly. That assumes there is no other medical/surgical reason for...

Re: Scleral contact lenses

I've been one of those long-term scleral wearers. Both before graft and after. Initially, I wore them because we could not get a good fit with regular RGP lenses, they would even flick out at times. I needed correction after graft and scleral lenses have the advantage of 'vaulting' over the graft If...

Re: Can I wear contact lenses?

I had a cataract develop after my first graft (which is not uncommon), this was removed about 12 months after the graft. My other eye already had an early cataract before my graft. In that case the second cataract was removed 12 weeks after the graft operation. It can be done safely by an experience...
