As you probably know, NHS charges go up on 1st April each year. The price of a NHS contact lens is now £50.50.

Hope you have a good year without loosing any!

Hi there the main difference between solutions for the different types of lenses is that soft lens solutions don't have preservatives in. So - you'd be OK using soft lens solutions for GP lenses but not vice versa. There are some manufactured for use with both types of lenses - the one I use is Quat...

Why don't you ask if you can have some anaesthetic drops in your eyes? I offer this as standard on all new patients. It makes it more comfortable for them (particularly if I need to try several lenses) and it makes it easier for me to assess the fit of the lens as the eyes aren't watering as much. I...

It's hard to help, without knowing the level of detail you need . You're right, you need to steer clear of eye diseases if you're looking at "normal" aging. The most obvious of these is presbyopia, as has already been said - the blurring of near vision. I've just put 'presbyopia' into Goog...

Hi The Flex edge lenses have been out for about a year. They are the same idea as softperms - Gas permeable centre fused with soft surround. One of the limitations with softperms has always been that they are just made in curvatures for "normal" eyes, so as soon as a KC eye gets steeper th...

Hi there Soft perms are good in mild KC, but unfortunately they aren't made in very steep parameters, so they're too flat for moderate or advanced KC (causing rubbing of the cornea). The Flex edge lenses which have been available from Jack Allen since spring 2006 go into the steep range, and I've be...

Hi there. Gareth posted that the speaker at the West Midlands meeting (Mr Savant)said that the average life of a graft was 15 years. Several people queried this on these message boards, so I raised it with him, as we work in the same clinic on Monday mornings. (Our corneal consultant usually quotes ...

That's good news - hope you have some success this time. By the way, there's one other option I forgot to mention - "piggy back" lenses, where the rigid GP lens is worn on top of a disposable soft lens for comfort. This has become much more practical in recent years, due to the high oxygen...

Don't give up! As far as contact lenses go, quite a few alternatives have come along in the last few years that you might find more comfortable. As Gareth has already said, there are Kerasoft lenses, if your KC is not too advanced. A lot of people also find Flex edge lenses more comfortable, without...
