It is quite a good idea to have a spare pair. I find that when my prescription changes I can hold onto the lens that is replaced and use it in an emergency (so long as my prescription has not changed too much). Wow, eh, ok, I had no idea it was going to be such a complicated issue. Looks like I'm going to be keeping the specialist busy for a while.

Many thanks for the reply. That makes perfect sense. My only worry about this is that when I get my new glasses prescribed for after lens/evening use, they will be no good for the odd occasion I decide to have a 'day off' the lenses.
