Insurance for NHS provided lenses?

Postby pags » Thu 27 Jan 2011 12:00 pm

Hi

I started wearing contact lenses provided by the NHS about 4 months ago and having been trialling different lenses in my left eye, in which the condition is quite serious.

Although I have never paid (or been asked) towards my lenses, the consultant has mentioned that should I loose them I may be asked to pay for a replacement. Sadly I lost my left lens last weekend whilst out walking (in the dark! - grrr!). On informing the hospital, they have told me I may have to pay for the replacement. Not sure of the cost yet - gulp!

Does anyone know anywhere that may offer me insurance against the loss of my NHS lenses?? Having checked my household policy there are not covered, nor can they offer cover.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum! I have moved your post to 'General Discussion Forum' as it will attract more notice here.

You ought to be charged the standard NHS price of £55 ish for your replacement lens. if you had needed a replacement for any other reason, such as a change of fit or change of prescription, the new lens would have been free if the replacement was required within 12 months of the original being dispensed.

All the best

Andrew

Andrew, thanks for your reply.

Bit of a relief if the cost is about £55 - although enough in these tough times, I had expected worse!
