Forum v3: Protecting the board from spammers

Nobody likes spam on the board, particularly the pornographic variety.

The new forum incorporates a "captcha" routine that asks all new users to type in some characters from a displayed graphic.

Being mindful of the eyesight of our user base, we've toned this down considerably to make the letters easier to read. That said, if you cannot decipher the supplied text, just send a mail to webmaster@keratoconus-group.org.uk and we'll authorise you manually.

The presence of this facility is regrettably necessary, but it will be kept under review, and we hope to add an audio alternative in the future.

John

Thank you for doing this. As you know I used often to find inappropriate spam on the forum when I logged on early in the morning. It is good to know that you have found a way of preventing this sort of material from appearing on the forum; but it is a pity that it was necessary!

A sign of the times in which we live!

Andrew

Now we know why you like logging on so early in the morning

Ah, but I still log on early in the morning, but spammers are but a distant memory! :D

My computer starts just after i have breakfast, and I log onto the forum as I get ready to start my day's work.

The truth is always more prosaic than any fiction.

Andrew,

Can you spot the Freudiant (spelling?) slip in our post?

Thanks Gareth. More careless fingers than Freudian slip! However, I have fixed it :D

Don't forget that that Google and other SE crawl the web and pick up pages and text. I had a bad experience of a forum and used my real name and was stalked by a troll. A troll is a mad and unpleasant nasty person who likes to disrupt forum topics and to provoke others into online fights. The best thing is do not use your full name or real name and never publish your email, number, address or website on any www forum. This maybe all common sence nowdays but some people, inc myself can be (and was/were) naive when using the big old www. :!:  :| if you have site remember a troll will find you, if you dont mind being seen on the web then do as you wish but be careful, IMO the web is a help but also a big danger to us all.

Well!
I'm sorry to see an organisation like the KC group resorting to those horrible CAPTCHA things - renowned bogeys off every VIP list/site etc.
They are completely inaccessible to anyone using access technology - speech output such as JAW or HAL or windoweyes, or Braille output, and of course text-only systems (as are audio alternatives).
What's more, the pornographers have their won singularly apposite ways to get round them - or so I' gather!!!
I'm just glad I registered on here in time to not be totally stumped by the thing.
I do hope the alternative route will be well and truly flagged up to those who will need it at the first point of CAPCHA-arrival and won't deter too many of the people who might be needing us the most.
