The answer to the first part of your question is that I try not to wear my rgp lens for more than 6 hours at a time, but after and hour or so with them out, I can put them back. This gives me up to ten or twelve hours a day.

RGP lenses can exacerbate keratoconus.

I guess we all have to find a way to live with our lenses that fits our lifestyle.

And yes, as I said, wearing contact lenses can exacerbate keratoconus.

Hi Nuttynat,
There's a variety of different lenses for KC if the corneal rgp lenses are now giving you problems. Some people find piggy backing (wearing a soft lens underneath the hard lens) works for them. Then there are hybrid lenses (hard centre, soft skirt), scleral lenses, semi sclerals such as SoClear, and some soft lenses made for KC such as Kerasoft or SoftK. So it's worth asking your optometrist whether any of these might work better for you.

Hi anne,
Thank you for all the information its really helpful do you have to pay more for them? Why dont they tell ya about all the other lenses. These rgp i horrible for me they irritate my eyes and when i take them out my eyes go all sticky :(

If you get your lenses through a hospital eye clinic then you'd pay the same charge whatever type of lenses you had. But not all hospitals will have all the different lens types. And yes, they are all more expensive than rgps. Most people do get on alright with rgps which is why those are the lenses that are offered first, plus the fact that people are less likely to get infections with rgp lenses. But it's certainly worth asking your optom what other lenses might be possible if you're having a lot of grief with rgps.
Good luck
Anne

I have been frequently told by numerous opticians that wearing a hard lens will not have an affect on the KC progression. Yet, I've always felt that it has. In fact, one optometrist even said it was more benficial as it was pushing the cornea back into shape and therefore stopping the progression.

Is this false? Does wearing a hard lens actually make the overall progression worse?
