UPDATE ON CHARLOTTE'S NEW(ISH) SPECS

Re: Specs pscript for R eye for Charlotte AND hybrids offered - PREV POST

Hi, Well Charlotte has been wearing her specs (plain glass left eye and pscript right eye) for the past month or so and with prompts and reminders (another "Charlottism" due to Down's syndrome and behavioral issues!!!! :? ) she is keeping them on. When asked "Better with or better without?" by me she says "Better with", difficult always to ascertain with her as she often has other ideas when it comes to describing her vision, bless her! Suffice to say tho that staff at her day centre have informed me that she does keep her specs on (and up on the bridge of her nose where they should be) for most of the day. They're very well informed and astute as to Charlotte and especially her management of KC which is a comfort to me when she's there. Soooooooooooooooo Tues 25th we are back at the Optom in Hull Eye Clinic so that Brian (optom) can see how she's getting on with her specs and to discuss the possible introduction of hybrid CL for her right eye. Scarring on the Left eye cornea from acutre hydrops earlier this year pretty much rules out contact lens in that one apparently (see prev posts for full story) her vision thru left eye is extremely poor to say the least and we have been told by the specialist that a graft in her left eye is the only way she will ever have the chance of any reasonable vision in it. We're still weighing up what's best to do for her really. Charlotte is almost 21 years old now and to be honest she doesn't have (and never will have) the mental capacity sufficient to understand the enormity of her situation re graft options. Re her left eye, she can see light/dark, large shapes etc but other than that we don't think theres much else going on there. She doesn't/can't tell us clearly just what her vision is like but obv we know from the optom etc that its poor, even in her right eye which we are hoping to bring up with a hybrid CL if she will tolerate it. If not then she will stay with the specs for just that right eye. they are photochrome so help with any light sensitivity.
I asked the optom about trying a CL in her left eye and he said that because of the position of the scar remaining from the hydrops that it would just magnify it further and there would be nothing to be gained for Charlotte. I felt like asking him to try anyway if it was ok with Char (she is very tolerant in that optom chair!!) but I didn't because I was of the mind that he's the expert but I must admit that with hindsight there's a little part of me that thinks, "What if??" well maybe nx Tuesday I will mention it? He's a smashing chap with mega patience and I really have no qualms about potentially asking "silly questions" especially on this matter. Charlotte's everything to me.
As usual, thanks for taking the time to read this and any thoughts or suggestions are sincerley appreciated.
Angie :)

Hey Angie, there is no such thing as a silly question. If you want to know, ask!

Don't discout the possible benefits of a graft.

As to her other eye, I could never tolerate a hybrid lens, but for people who do wear them they offer great improvement.

All the best tomorrow.

Andrew
