Struggling with pain

Postby RobinWragg » Thu 21 Sep 2017 7:56 pm

Hello all, I have mild KC in my right eye and even milder in my left, put the pain caused by eye strain is so bad it's sometimes debilitating. The pain develops quickly when I try to read anything or look people in the eyes during conversation, and increases throughout the day. Sometimes I wake up with my eyes still aching from the day before. Ibuprofen helps a bit, but only if I keep my eyes closed for an hour or two after taking it. I've tried glasses, soft lenses, and RGP lenses, which have all improved my vision to some extent, but none have helped with the pain. When I've talked to doctors about it, they've adjusted my prescription but so far I've had no pain relief. Sometimes I have felt that doctors haven't taken me seriously because my KC is only mild. I don't think I could be eligible for operations like intacs, as my vision is not too bad.
I've just started a course at university and I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish it if this continues. I'd be really grateful for any advice, or even just your personal experience of battling with pain.
Thanks

Although headaches are not uncommon with KC if our eyes are unbalanced and we're struggling to focus properly, I don't think this amount of pain is common. I don't know what to suggest, apart from talking again to your optometrist and specialist. Maybe a referral to an orthoptist (who can sometimes help making the eyes work together better) would help?
And do make sure your uni and the disability unit there is aware of your problems. There's a leaflet you can download on 'Supporting Students with KC' at www.keratoconus-group.org.uk/sitev3/publications.html
