KC sufferer for 13 years.

Postby clareamanda1 » Wed 01 Feb 2017 5:17 pm

I was diagnosed with KC 13 years ago at the grand age of 27. It is severe in my left eye, I have to wear a very large GP lens in it and in my right eye i wear a smaller GP lens. Glasses are no help with my left eye but i can manage in the right eye wearing glasses around the house in the evening. By now it should be stabilising, and according to my contact lens specialistit is. I can't help thinking about when I'm older, at the moment i can just about manage in the evenings in glasses ( purely using my right eye) but its a constant worry incase it suddenly detieriates. Does anybody eles worry like me? 13 years and you'd think I'd be pass the worrying stage..instead I'm getting worse!!! Hence the joining of a support group. Love to hear your stories.

Hi Clareamanda and welcome!
I'm sure most of us go through times when we worry about KC regardless of how long we've had it. But the fact that your KC has stayed fairly mild in your right eye is positive and although there are never any 100% guarantees, it's unlikely to suddenly deteriorate now you've reached the grand old age of 40(!) when most people's KC begins to stabilise. I had corneal transplants in both eyes in my 30s (and still need contact lenses) but most people with KC never get to the stage of needing a transplant, so my story isn't typical. But we have lots of members who are still managing pretty well with contact lenses in their 60s, 70s and even 80s! I hope that helps.

Hi ClareAmanda
I'm completely new to the forum but I agree with what Anne says. I had a corneal graft on the left eye for KC at age 18 (almost 30 mumble years ago) The right eye had KC also but it has never worsened (maybe the rgp lens stops it. I know what you mean about getting older but try not to worry - my opto had a lady patient in her 90s still using contact lenses. I find it helpful to take a step back and think about how incredible it is that a tiny piece of plastic can help me see.

Hi
Do you know something..your right. It's amazing how a small piece of plastic can turn your life around. I went for a regular eye test 2 weeks ago, the optician was lovely, very positive and boosted my moral abit. Since joining this group my contact lens specialist at the hospital who I've saw for 13 years as moved hospitals. I'm not worrying though..positive thinking all the way!! Thanks for your words of support xx
