Re: Vision worse with RGP Lenses
Hi, You raise a number of points and I'll try to address them separately. There used to be a school of thought that wearing gas permeable lenses stopping the progression of keratoconus by pushing the cornea back. However, we no longer believe this to the case. To have any effect in "pushing the...

Re: HES vouchers.
Hi Dek The issue is that NHS Voucher scheme for glasses on the High Street is very different from HES voucher scheme for contact lenses! The former is called GOS (General Ophthalmic Services) which provides help towards the cost of glasses ONLY to people in certain categories- children and adults re...

Re: HES vouchers.
Hi Dek it's a tricky situation, and I sympathise with you. I am afraid it's all down to finances. I came across a very similar scenario a few years ago. We run clinics at 4 hospitals, and also have a small number of patients we see at our practice under "HES umbrella", similar to what you'...

Re: HES vouchers.
Hi Dek I'll try to shed some light into this. There are two slightly different issues here: 1. Regarding charges for lenses under HES, hospitals have been allowed to make a "statutory charge" for contact lenses for decades. Hence, unless you were exempt from NHS charges (eg receiving incom...

Re: Tilting my glasses down corrects my keratoconus completely. So possible to correct by changing prescription?
Hi This is a tricky one! Keratoconic corneas often have what is called "high order aberrations" which cause the ghosting you're getting with your glasses. You've found, by experimentation, that tilting your glasses down clears the ghosting. This is due to the image formed by the tilted len...

Re: NHS experience
Hi Fabian I'll try to explain, hopefully, without confusing you too much! The only explanation for you to have good vision with both -2.75 and -10 lens is that your old -2.75 lens is definitely much flatter in curvature than the new one. There's a thin layer of tears between your lens and your corne...

Re: Complex Lens Voucher & Free Eye Tests
Hi Charlotte, I am afraid prescription of +2.00/-11.00x45 does not fall into "complex lens category". The spherical power which is the first number (+2.00) needs to be +/- 10 or more. There's something called "transposition" which means a prescription can be written in 2 differen...

Re: Trying to get referred to Moorfields
Hi Jay
The easiest way, by far, is to get registered with a GP in London and ask him/her to refer you. In theory, you have the right to demand your GP to refer you to anywhere in the country, but, in practice, it's often not as easy as that.

Re: Son of 7 years old just diognosed
Hi, As someone with a lot of experience in fitting contact lenses for keratoconus, I have a slightly different approach to this. My views are: 1. Seven year old is rather young to be fitted for keratoconus lenses. Although a lot of kids 7 year old or younger can wear standard disposable soft lenses ...

Re: Honest Opinions Please
Thanks Anne for your timely intervention! Michaell, its such a shame that you seem to have so much anger in you. You seem to genuinely believe that there's a big consiparacy out there with the professionals fitting keratoconic patients with contact lenses for some ulterior motive. Please rest assure...
